Uganda Rainwater Association (URWA)

The Uganda Rainwater Association (URWA) is a national membership organisation which focuses on rainwater harvesting, with particular experience in domestic supply. URWA supports communities to improve their socio-economic situation through mobilisation, information, skills and experience-sharing, and collaboration between its members.

Vision, mission, and objectives

URWAS’s  vision is to sustainably manage the rainwater resource in Uganda, and its mission is to promote rainwater management for sustainable domestic water supply, production, and environment conservation in Uganda. URWA seeks to achieve its vision and mission through the following objectives:

  • Influencing the development of policies and legislation that promote and mainstream rainwater in the relevant sectors at district and national levels.
  • Facilitating collaboration and information-sharing amongst the various stakeholders.
  • Promoting research and development of appropriate technologies, approaches, and best practices in rainwater management.
  • Strengthening the capacity of URWA and its members to effectively and efficiently fulfil their mandate.
Networking and partnership

Founded in December 1997, URWA was registered in 1999 as a Company Limited by Guarantee followed by a 2006 registration as a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), to raise rainwater management and utilisation among all development sectors in Uganda. The URWA Secretariat was established in 2001 with support from the Greater Horn of Africa Rainwater Partnership (GHARP), and with subsequent technical and financial support from Water Aid Uganda, and the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV). URWA is also supported by the Regional Land Management (RELMA) project (RELMA), a Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) supported programme, and the Southern and Eastern Africa Rainwater Network (SEARNET).
